# Stream Music in Your Discord Server with Prowl Bot

> Prowl's music player lets you stream from YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, and more — or host your own audio files — directly in Discord voice channels.

Prowl's music feature turns any Discord voice channel into a listening room. Queue up tracks from YouTube by search or URL, control playback, manage the volume, and more — all through slash commands.

## How It Works

Prowl uses yt-dlp under the hood to resolve and stream audio from YouTube and other supported sources. When you run `/music play`, Prowl joins your current voice channel automatically and starts playing.

<Note>
  You must be connected to a voice channel before running `/music play`. Prowl joins the channel you are in at the time of the request.
</Note>

## Commands Reference

Use these slash commands in any text channel while you're connected to a voice channel.

| Command                      | Description                                                                 |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `/music play <query or URL>` | Search for a track or paste a URL to add it to the queue and begin playback |
| `/music pause`               | Pause the currently playing track                                           |
| `/music resume`              | Resume a paused track                                                       |
| `/music skip` | Skip to the next track in the queue |
| `/music stop` | Stop playback entirely, clear the queue, and disconnect |
| `/music queue` | Display the current queue with track titles and who requested each track |
| `/music nowplaying`          | Show details about the track currently playing                              |
| `/music volume <0–100>`      | Set the playback volume as a percentage                                     |
| `/music loop`                | Toggle loop mode for the current track                                      |
| `/music shuffle`             | Randomize the remaining tracks in the queue                                 |
| `/music remove <position>` | Remove a specific track from the queue by position |
| `/music clear`               | Clear the entire queue                                                      |

<Tip>
  You can add an entire playlist at once with `/music play <playlist URL>`. Prowl will append every track in the playlist to the end of the current queue.
</Tip>

## Queue Management

Prowl maintains a persistent queue for each server so members can keep the music going without interruption.

* **Adding tracks** — Any member can run `/music play` to append a track to the end of the queue.
* **Viewing the queue** — `/music queue` shows the current queue.
* **Removing a track** — Use `/music remove <position>` to pull a specific track out of the lineup.
* **Shuffling** — Run `/music shuffle` to randomize the remaining tracks.
* **Looping** — Toggle loop mode for the current track with `/music loop`.

<Note>
  Queue state is held in memory. If the bot is disconnected or restarted, the current queue will be cleared. Save your favorite playlists as a URL so you can re-queue them quickly.
</Note>

## DJ Role

If you want to restrict who can control music playback, you can designate a **DJ role** in the dashboard under **Music → DJ Role**. Members without the DJ role can still use `/music play` to add tracks, but commands like `/music skip`, `/music stop`, `/music volume`, and `/music remove` will be limited to DJs and server administrators.

<Tip>
  Set a DJ role if your music channel tends to get chaotic — it prevents members from skipping tracks or changing volume without permission.
</Tip>

## Troubleshooting

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Bot Won't Join">
    **Prowl doesn't join the voice channel when I run `/music play`.**

    * Make sure you are connected to a voice channel before running the command.
    * Check that Prowl has the **Connect** and **Speak** permissions on that voice channel.
    * If the channel has a user limit set, ensure Prowl isn't being blocked by it — bots count toward the limit unless you grant Prowl the **Move Members** permission.
    * Try running `/music stop` and `/music play` again to force a fresh connection.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Audio Cutting Out">
    **The music keeps stuttering or dropping out.**

    * Audio interruptions are most often caused by network congestion on Discord's voice servers. Try running `/music stop` and `/music play` again to reconnect.
    * If the problem persists with a specific source, try an alternative link or search term.
    * For self-hosted audio, ensure your server's bandwidth is sufficient and the file URL is reachable.
